The iconic Vietnamese bánh mì dates back to the late 19th century when South Vietnam was a French colony & baguettes were only reserved for the rich since wheat had to be imported after failing to grow them on foreign land. When Vietnam became independent, the baguette was available for all. Yippee! The Vietnamese altered the recipe to make it light & airy on the inside & golden thin crusted on the outside with yummy fillings at ridiculously low prices sold by aunties on the streets of Saigon with plastic stools & tables.
For many years, Tammi could not find the same bánh mì recipes in London so when COVID hit in 2020, it was the perfect time to start a new delicious journey and so with the support of her family, Lò Việt was created. After many many burnt batches, we can offer you the iconic handmade bánh mì! Unfortunately, due to importation & inflation we can’t offer the same aunties’ 50p prices.
Today, we are glad to report that her brother, Tony, is happy to exit the rat race & Tammi is happy checking bread quality everyday (uh hmm…eating bánh mì).
